Most Recognizable Jokers
We’ve already been over the Jared Leto Joker grillz, but he isn’t the only Joker out there who will be portrayed on Halloween. Cesar Romero played the Joker in the 1960s on the Batman television show, and he was also the first man to act as the Joker on screen. Jack Nicholson was the first cinematic Joker that audiences ever saw, and he was truly mesmerizing in character. While these actors all played the same villain, there are some key differences in their characters and look that differentiate them.
Jared Leto’s Joker is in love, albeit a sick love, with Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad. His iconic makeup is a look that took makeup artists three hours to achieve to try to reflect his character. This process includes multiple layers to create the dirty, scarred look. They needed something simultaneously scary and sexy. This Joker features a more modern take on his look, filled with tattoos and the grill that make him stand out among the rest. He still has the staple green hair and wacky attitude that we all associate with the psychotic villain. To copy this look, check out our Suicide Squad Joker teeth (click the image above).
Cesar Romero as the Joker has a painted white face and bright red lips, signature Joker makeup qualities. He was a bit stubborn, so artists had to paint over his mustache because he wouldn’t shave it off for filming.
This actor put a dark spin on the villain that fans were excited to see. He had a different origin story than the others, where he started out as a mean local mobster in Gotham. He runs into some trouble and winds up having a magnificently horrifying transformation into the Joker after falling into a vat of acid, turning his hair green, his skin white, and his lips red. He tries to get his facial features fixed with surgery, but winds up with the terrifying smile that won’t go away. Jack Nicholson’s performance brought the character to life and helped the franchise gain popularity. Dressing up as this Joker might require some fun makeup tricks to mimic his permanent smile.
Ages of the Joker
The Golden Age of the evil mastermind began when he debuted as Batman’s first villain in the comic book Batman #1 in 1940. He started out as a murderer, but his creators realized that marketing to children would be easier and began to change his character into more of a prankster than a serious death threat.
The Silver Age was underway when a Comics Code began being enforced, banning content that was too gory from comic books. The Joker began to appear less and less until he was brought back to life by the popular Batman television series. Unfortunately, as the show lost popularity, so did the Joker. This age did establish some key traits for his character, such as crazy elaborate crimes and lethal pranks.
The Bronze Age went back to the character’s roots and returns him as a psychotic murderer pitted against Batman. His character design was revamped to extend his jaw and make his body lankier, as well as experimenting with new outfits.
Finally, we enter the Modern Age. In 1992 Harley Quinn was introduced as the Joker’s sidekick and eventual love interest. There was a lot of development for the characters in both comics and animated series, but this isn’t the last we’ll see of him.
The Joker is getting his own standalone movie, which is drawing a lot of attention. There are rumors that Leonardo DiCaprio might be asked to play him, so it is safe to say we can expect to be blown away by the finished film.
Out of all the Jokers we have seen over the years, the Jared Leto portrayal will be one of the best Halloween costume options. His unique look is eye catching, and accessorizing should be top priority—so shop now!
